Training and racing can provide athletes with multiple factors that they can not
control but have to be aware of and ready for. Weather can play a big part during a
race. Rain, snow, hail, heat, humidity, gusting wind etc, can be an unexpected "treat"
for runners on race day. Last year race directors, spectators, and athletes were not
prepared for unseasonable conditions during the Chicago marathon where
temperatures exceeded 85 degrees causing a shortage of hydration and multiple
medical emergencies. So think like a boy and girl scout, be prepared!!
Tips on being prepared for any weather:
1. Remember the creed: Runners run, always (so that means you have to train in all
types of weather). So don't bail out on the run because it looks like rain or if it is a
little too hot.
2. DTA (Don't Trust Anyone): Don't count on anyone else for nutrition and hydration.
Bring what you are used to training with and what has been working well for you.
Don't chance that there will be the right types of gels, liquids, and solids on the
course.
3. Dress rehearsal. Practice running in different types of running gear closer to
marathon day. What if it is 20 degrees colder than you anticipated? You may need to
race in a long sleeve, need gloves, or need a running cap. Don't chance trying
anything new that day!.
