Training for an event such as a marathon, you find a lot of people cramming the
numbers at the end of the week. The numbers that I am referring to is the number of
miles. Ask any marathoner what their weekly mileage is and you can always tell how
hard they are working to get in those miles. But with race day approaching, put your
high school and college studying antics aside. Stop Cramming! Squeezing in those
extra miles on already tired legs usually never really benefits you as an athlete. Try
this instead:
* Get a massage. Have a professional rub out those twisted knots in your back, neck
and shoulders. Have a professional stretch and massage those running legs. Maybe
see a Chiropractor and put your hips back in alignment. Take some time to have a
soak in a hot tub. Running does put a lot of stress on your muscles and joints.
Loosen them up for a better run!
* Go to bed. We all say it "I really need to go to sleep earlier". Even myself, even as I
type this on my couch and the 10 o'clock news has been on for 30 minutes already.
But rest really does the body good. Rest is where you repair. Treat your body like a
professional marathoner: sit instead of stand, lay down instead of sitting, pamper
yourself every non training moment as possible, just don't let your boss catch you.
* Picture the finish line. When doing your last few training runs, practice positive self
imagery. Imagine yourself pumping your arms for the finish line. Imagine yourself on
the course of your big race. Don't dread those last few runs, make them work and
inspire you for the greatness to come. Finish strong!
* Get some action. You know what I mean. Don't be one of those runners caught
saying "Not tonight honey. I have to save my energy for my marathon in three
weeks". Because guess what, we know you have a marathon in three weeks, but
know one knows how long it will take for your significant other to offer you sex
again. Besides being the ultimate relaxer, having sex helps you maintain healthy
hormonal levels. Look, that whole no sex thing only works with fighters. Would you
want to fight a guy that hasn't had sex in three months?
