Each day at the store we get a few questions that seem to be on many runners'
minds, or should I say feet.  "How can I stop getting blisters?" and "What is up with
this black toenail?" Unfortunately black toenails and blisters are very common to
runners. There are a combination of reasons why we get them. Let us take a look to
see which could be the cause for you.

1. If the shoe fits. Believe it or not, many runners don't know their own shoe size.
Often we have runners come in
and say "I wear a size 8 running shoe" yet by the time we are done with them, they
walk out with a size 9 or 10. Your dress shoe size (or the size you like telling people
you are),
is very different from your running shoe size. When buying a running shoe, a runner
has to factor in what size their feet will become on the run. Your foot swells during
exercise and spreads out with the impact of the run. So, a good fitting running shoe
has about  one inch of space between the tip of the shoe and your largest toe (not
always the "big" toe). So get your foot measured by a pro and then go up a size. If
the measuring tool reads 8, you are most likely wear a 9 or 9.5 running shoe.

2. Sock it to me. You all know the commercial "cotton, the fabric of our lives". Yes,
that may be true for casual wear and sleeping but in the world of sweating, speed,
track workouts, triathlons, and distance running, save the cotton for your bedsheets.
If you are running in cotton socks, chances are you are doing more harm than good
to your feet. Cotton gets wet, stays wet, causes friction. Choose dryfit, moisture
management, seamless construction, sport blended socks for running. Your feet will
thank you.

3. Hey baby, is that some lube in your pocket or are you just happy to see me.
Aaahhh, the many uses of lubrication! If something squeaks, we grease it to reduce
friction. Consider your blisters as your "squeaky wheel" syndrome. Stop the
squeaking! Constant friction causes blisters, so with runners averaging 60 to 100
steps per foot per minute, think about all that friction. Before putting on your socks,
try applying some Body Glide, petroleum jelly, or other skin protecting ointment on
your hot spots that either chafe or blister after long runs. Pamper those feet, they
will take you a world of happy running lavished with 5k's, 10k's, 13.1 miles, and 26.2
miles.
